Summer Hydration Series – Week 1
June 28, 2025

Are You Actually Hydrated?
Welcome to our new 3-week summer wellness series! Let’s talk hydration. Most of us think we drink enough water — but research shows Americans are chronically dehydrated, especially the older population. It’s easy to fall behind, especially in warmer months, and even easier to miss the signs.
One of the biggest surprises for our patients? Hunger is often a disguise for thirst. Studies show that about 37% of people confuse thirst for hunger — meaning we’re reaching for snacks when our body’s really asking for water.
And what about the old “8 glasses a day” rule? It’s not wrong, but it’s outdated. Newer science recommends around 2.7 liters (about 11.5 cups) for women and 3.7 liters (about 15.5 cups) for men — and that includes total fluid from drinks and food.
The key takeaway? Start paying attention to how often you drink, not just how much. Waiting until you’re thirsty is often too late.
