Chiropractic Research: From 1895 to Today

Chiropractic research has transformed the profession from its 1895 beginnings into a modern, evidence-informed approach to health. Studies show chiropractic care can support patients with back pain, neck pain, and headaches while promoting overall wellness. Today, chiropractic is recognized in national guidelines and trusted by millions worldwide.

Modern chiropractic research timeline

InfoFrom the first adjustment to now

We began with D.D. Palmer’s first adjustment in 1895, followed B.J. Palmer’s leadership and outreach, and reviewed the Wilk vs AMA case that helped secure chiropractic’s place in healthcare. Today, patients choose chiropractic not only for pain relief but for everyday wellness.

ChecklistWhat recent research supports

  • Low back pain: Non-drug, hands-on care can help reduce pain and improve function.
  • Neck pain: Manual therapy and movement strategies can ease stiffness and tension.
  • Headaches: Cervical spine care and posture work may reduce frequency and intensity for some patients.

Non-pharmacologic care like chiropractic is recommended by the American College of Physicians’ guidelines for low back pain.
