August 2026 • Week 4 — Supplements, Explained
Fish Oil: What EPA and DHA Actually Do
Fish oil is one of the supplements with real, well-established value behind it. It is also one where quality varies enormously, and where a cheap bottle can be worse than taking nothing at all. To close out the series, let's cover what actually matters: the two omega-3s that do the work, and how to avoid a rancid one.
Why EPA and DHA, Not Just "Omega-3"
"Omega-3" is a family of fats, but two of them do most of the heavy lifting: EPA and DHA. These are the active forms your body actually uses. The plant-based omega-3 you hear about (ALA, from flax and chia) has to be converted into EPA and DHA first — and your body does that conversion poorly, only a small fraction. That is the whole reason a marine source like fish oil matters: it delivers EPA and DHA directly.
What They Do
- EPA is the one most associated with the body's inflammation balance. It is studied for heart health, joints, and mood.
- DHA is structural. It is a major building block of the brain, the nervous system, and the eyes — which is why it matters across every stage of life, from a developing child to an aging brain.
- Together, they support cardiovascular health, brain and nerve function, healthy joints, and more. This is the supplement that ties directly into the nervous-system focus behind everything we do here.
How to Spot a Cheap or Rancid Fish Oil
Fish oil is a delicate fat. It oxidizes — goes rancid — when exposed to heat, light, and air, and a rancid fish oil works against you instead of for you. Here is how to tell the good from the bad:
- The smell test. A strong, foul fishy odor is the clearest sign it has gone off. Fresh fish oil smells mild, not rotten.
- Repeated "fishy burps." Often a sign the oil is already oxidized, not just that you took it.
- Check the actual EPA and DHA. A bottle can say "1000 mg fish oil" and contain only a few hundred milligrams of real EPA and DHA. Read the panel for the two numbers that count, not the total oil.
- Look for built-in antioxidants. Quality oils add protection like mixed tocopherols (vitamin E), rosemary extract, or ascorbyl palmitate to keep the oil from oxidizing on the shelf.
- Small fish are cleaner. Oils from small fish — anchovy, sardine, mackerel — tend to be lower in the heavy metals that accumulate in larger fish.
- Third-party testing. A quality maker tests for purity and freshness and will stand behind those numbers.
One I Recommend: OmegaGenics EPA-DHA 500
The fish oil we highlight in our Essential 4 collection is OmegaGenics Fish Oil EPA-DHA 500 by Metagenics. It lines up with everything above:
- A meaningful dose of the forms that matter — 600 mg EPA and 400 mg DHA per serving
- Sourced from small, cold-water fish: anchovy, sardine, and mackerel
- Protected against rancidity with mixed tocopherols, rosemary extract, and ascorbyl palmitate
- Natural lemon flavor to cut the fishy aftertaste
It is a clean, honest fish oil that tells you exactly how much EPA and DHA you are getting — which, as you now know, is the whole point.
You can find OmegaGenics EPA-DHA 500 and the full Essential 4 collection in our online supplement store. For a limited time, sign up before the end of August and get an extra 5% off your first order. This is general education, not medical advice. Talk with your healthcare provider before starting or changing any supplement, especially if you take medication (fish oil can affect blood thinning) or manage a health condition.
That's a Wrap — Supplements, Explained
Four weeks, four foundations: Magnesium, Vitamin D, a quality multivitamin, and fish oil. The thread through all of it has been the same — know what you are taking and why, choose forms your body can actually use, and skip what you do not need. Good supplementation supports a healthy life; it does not replace one.
Looking Ahead
As we look ahead to September — fall schedules, routines resetting, and the kids heading back to school — keep an eye out for our next series. More practical, everyday health, coming your way soon.
