September 2026 • Week 3 — Fall Wellness
Why Good Posture Starts at Your Feet
This month we have worked our way down a child's posture — from the backpack on the shoulders toward the ground. This week we finish at the part that holds everything up: the feet. And this one is for the whole family, adults included.
We covered this in depth last year in our Strong Feet, Strong Foundation series. If you missed it, those issues are worth a look: Week 1, Week 2, and Week 3. Here is the short version, and why it matters heading into a busy fall.
Why Start With the Feet?
Think of your body like a building. If the foundation shifts, every floor above it has to compensate. Your feet are that foundation. Each one contains 26 bones, 33 joints, three arches, and more than 100 muscles, tendons, and ligaments — all working together every time you take a step.
When the arches collapse or roll inward, the effect travels straight up the chain: the knees rotate inward, the hips and pelvis twist, and the lower back and neck are left to absorb the difference. A surprising amount of knee, hip, and back discomfort actually starts at the feet.
Your Feet and Your Nervous System
There is a piece of this that fits everything we talk about here. Your feet are constantly sending your nervous system feedback about balance, position, and movement. When that foundation is unstable, your body is quietly working overtime to keep you upright — and, importantly, spinal adjustments do not hold as well when the base underneath them keeps pulling things out of position.
Why Custom Orthotics, and Why Not Store-Bought
The insoles at the drugstore are mass-produced by shoe size alone. Custom orthotics are made from a personalized 3D scan of your own feet, and they support all three arches rather than just cushioning the heel. That is the difference between padding and actual support.
- Support the medial, lateral, and transverse arches to stabilize the whole foundation
- Help keep the feet, knees, hips, and pelvis in better alignment
- Improve comfort during long hours of standing, and support balance
- Help your chiropractic adjustments hold longer between visits
They can also help with the foot problems people put up with for years: plantar fasciitis and heel pain, ankle stiffness, and forefoot pain.
Yes — Children Benefit Too
Custom orthotics are not just for adults. Children's feet are developing rapidly, and a stable foundation supports healthy posture and biomechanics during those growing years. For active kids — soccer, basketball, tennis, anything high-impact — good support can improve comfort and help reduce the wear that leads to injury.
Signs a child might benefit include complaints of foot, leg, or knee pain, a sore back, posture you have wondered about, or heavy involvement in sports. Children's orthotics are built with room to grow, and addressing the foundation early can head off posture-related problems down the road. (Our friends at Foot Levelers have a helpful parent's guide if you want to read more.)
Now through November 15: one pair of custom orthotics for $299 (regularly $386 — a savings of $87). It starts with a free digital foot scan that takes under three minutes, no appointment needed. Many patients can also use HSA or FSA funds. Stop in for your scan, or call us with any questions — for you or for your kids.
This is general education, not medical advice. A scan and evaluation help determine whether custom orthotics are appropriate for you or your child.
Next Week
Week 4 closes out the month with fall sports season: the most common injuries we see in young athletes, and how chiropractic care can help with both preventing them and bouncing back.
